Detailed description of Wakefield Valley Golf Course, CLOSED 2014

Wakefield Valley Golf & Conference Center is a Semi-Private, 27 hole golf facility located in Westminster, Maryland. Wakefield has three 9- hole courses: The Green Course, The White Course, and The Gold Course. For variety, these 9-hole courses can be paired to make 3 different 18-hole championship golf course combinations.

The three nines that make up their 27 championship holes each have their own personality, from the long par 5's on the Green Course to the waterholes and hilly terrain on the White Course to the demanding tee shots on the Gold Course. Combined with the second highest slope rating in Maryland, the variety of these 27 holes makes Wakefield Valley a golfer's delight!

Wakefield Valley has been host to the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur Qualifiers, as well as many other USGA and MAPGA events. Wakefield is open year round to the public.

The course closed in 2014.

This facility has been shuttered for at least 2 years...it is a Park belonging to the City of Westminster now. Gone never to return.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I won't play again

Have reviewed this course before, generally positively. Sadly, it has gone seriously downhill over the last few years, as the previous few raters indicate. Played here 4-4-13 for $12 with an internet coupon, and quite honestly, the course is not even worth that much. It is a very nice layout, with lots of challenging holes and good fundamental design, it's the conditions that are atrocious. Obviously, the ownership is in financial trouble, as the course sadly lacks maintenance. Stay away!

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Worse than average course for the area

While picturesque with a nice layout, the condition is little more than a cow pasture. The tee boxes are weed patches; the fairways aren't much better; the greens are less than average. They would have to pay ME to play the course again. It would take $2-5 million to bring it to some semblance of a decent condition.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Better courses for less nearby

The folks in the pro shop were friendly and attentative. The pace of play was good as it took about 3 1/2 hrs to play. No one was playing. The tee boxes needed help and the sand traps were in terrible shape. Most of the traps had little sand or had plenty of small stones. The only drinking water was in large water containors that did not have ice in them. So the water was not cold and there were only a few of these around the course. Not real good on the hot day we played. The layout was still okay but would not go back..

Our group of travelling seniors played here 10-14-08, for the second time this year. Course has three nines, and we played White-Gold.

All three nines are very challenging, with ratings around 70 and slopes above 130. Layout is quite nice, a fair amount of water, good use of elevation changes, and lots of mature trees. Some excellent holes on each nine, especially #2 of the Gold nine, a 350 yard dogleg left, with a large, intimidating pond in the corner of the bend: it is the #1 handicap hole on that nine, and very much deserves to be. Course has seven par 3-s, and five of them are over serious water. Views from a couple of the tee boxes are really spectacular. Tee boxes are generally fairly small, but relatively flat. Fairways are pretty wide, and the many bunkers well placed. Greens are medium large, some are quite significantly contoured/sloped, and all usually putt medium fast.

Conditions today were a little disappointing: many of the fairways have large patches of dead grass, and the rough was seriously juicy, and in need of mowing. The greens were aerated a few weeks ago, and have not come back yet: they are lumpy, bumpy and very unpredicatble.

Course is not especialy well marked for distances, so a hand held GPS is a real value when playing here.

Clubhouse is modest, snack bar is too. The restaurant upstairs is excellent, but not open most weekdays. Staff is always friendly, and the starters deserve a special nod for their eagerness to assist.

This is a very nice layout that needs some more TLC and maintenance money. Still, we recommend it, as the senior rate of $30 is very competitive for the area.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
